NYC Taxi Logos

A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that the NYC cabs have taken on a new logo identity and it is terrible! Horrible blocky letters that look like they have been over outlined and the letter spacing makes me cringe. I wondering if others had seen it, what they thought of it and who did it.

Last week, the New York Times came up with all these answers for me. They ran a series of articles explaining who did it, how the logo became a frankensteined mess and also critiques/criticism from eight designers. Also they want you to design and sumbit a new Taxi logo if you think you can do better.
