McDonald's Pop Art

I usually don't play online marketing games but I've had the kind of day where the idea of spitting soda onto a canvas seemed like a more productive (read: non-destructive) use of my time. McDonald's Pop Art allows visitors to pick their favorite soda flavors, a straw and dribble, spit and spray them onto a virtual canvas. Its actually kind of fun! Go forth and waste 10 minutes of your billable time!

Illustration Garage Sale

We love finding reasonably-priced artwork to make our walls pretty. That's why we are excited that Mark Penxa, a friend of Pica + Pixel and an amazing illustrator, has a great art garage sale going right now! With prices ranging from $15—$75, everyone can leave with something to make them happy. I personally snapped up two pieces for myself. And while you're there, check out his sketchbook, snowboards for DC and skateboards for The Girl Skateboard Co.. Rad.

Hugo Awards: Winners one and all.

The Hugo Awards, the prestigious science fiction award given annually since 1955 by the World Science Fiction Society (WSFS), held a contest to redesign the logo and award for 2009. There were 390 entries from 215 different entrants from 24 different countries. The winning entry was created by Jeremy Kratz of Arkansas. The logo was used to create this year's trophy and distributed to the winners last night including my personal favorite, Neil Gaiman who received the award for best novel.

Congrats to both Jeremy for the logo and Neil (and all the other nominees and winners) for continuing to inspire us with stories full of imagination!

sfgirlbybay: surf style beauty

[Surf Style collages from sfgirlbybay]

In keeping with the tropical/holiday theme this week, this is, sfgirlbybay, the online moniker of interior design writer/editor Victoria Smith. She has recently featured several tropically-themed posts so I thought this was a perfect time to introduce my favorite interiors blog. sfgirlbybay features a wide array of interior design-related topics and her posts occasionally feature her own lovely photography.

Holidays in Sunny Florida

[Image by David Klein. Link via Grain Edit]

Sorry for the recent absence. As always happens when I plan to go on holiday, I get swamped at work and have to double-time it, so my extracurricular activities have had to take a backseat over the past couple of weeks. That said, it seems fitting to post a few holiday-related posts in honor of the end-of-summer travels. Hope you enjoy them and I'll be back soon!

More clipart to love

Pica + Pixel are huge fans of Charles S. Anderson and his lovely repository of vintage clipart called CSA Images. Bliss coursed through our veins when we found out that some of their stock was selling for $7 per black and white images for the world to use and abuse. We got a little nostalgic to see that the art collages to advertise the new collection reminded us of Craphound. Yay!

Sagmeister rip-off or homage?

I don't think he did this, but it reminds me of the work he has been doing the past couple of years.

Blog: Oatmeal and Cinnamon

While looking for illustrators for a project at work the other day, I found a great little blog called Oatmeal and Cinnamon that focuses on a couple of our big obsessions here at Pica + Pixel: handwritten type, wonderful illustrations and just general awesomeness.
