Another Reason to Love Chris Ware

Chris Ware is one of our favorite artist here at Pica + Pixel. Our love for him has only grown after seeing his rejected cover for Fortune's 500 issue. Ware captured all the messiness and dishonesty of capitalism going on in our country today. The closeups show Guantanamo Bay, the government bailing out the wealthy, the horrible housing market and much more. To check out more of the closeups, check out this slideshow.

NYC Event: George Lois Talk

SPD is having George Lois talk on Tuesday, March 30th at FIT to discuss his famous Esquire covers and his new book from Assouline. I've seen George Lois speak and I have to say, "DON'T MISS IT!!" He gives an amazing and inspiring (though curse-word filled) talk. Wanna see one of the original Mad Men? Then don't miss George Lois.

Eye Candy: Anorak Magazine

This week I received my first issue of Anorak magazine and I am smitten. Anorak is a British kids magazine that is the loopy, psychedelic, modern-day Highlights of today. It is chocked full of whimsical, colorful illustrations; cute stories and silly activities. The only draw-back is that it comes quarterly so I'll have to wait a couple months before I get my next Anorak fix.

Another magazine casualty

I.D. magazine announced yesterday that it will be shutting it’d doors after 55 years of publishing. I’ll greatly miss the product design magazine’s insightful articles and beautiful photography and design. Emigre turns 25!!!!

Emigre just released Emigre No. 70: The Look Back Issue – Celebrating 25 Years in Graphic Design. The book lovingly traces the history of the magazine from its start in the late 1980s through today. The 512-page book covers all 69 issues of Emigre magazine showing off how it influenced and reflected the trends in the design community. Rudy VanderLans designed the book and it has interviews with The Designers Republic, Rick Valicenti, Vaughan Oliver, Ed Fella and much, much more. It is a must have for every designer whether you are a seasoned veteran designer who designed through the 80s or a fresh-faced design student just starting out.

Coinciding along with the release of the book, there will be a show at Gallery 16 in San Francisco showing off various spreads from the magazine, press sheets and promotional posters so check it out from December 18, 2009 - January 30, 2010.

20 Tweetable Truths About Magazines

This video was created by the magazine trade organization, Magazine Publishers of America, as an introduction to the Magazine Innovation Summit but the video has made its way to YouTube with Tweet-sized statements about the statistics of magazine readership and its advantages to other media.

Bonus? It's been lovingly set in Gotham all caps.

Its a nicely created flash video and a great reminder that people are still looking for tangible non-Tweet-sized information.

Magazine Death Toll Rises

Today, Conde Nast announced that Gourmet, Cookie, Modern Bride and Elegant Bride would all shutter their doors. For me, I am the most sad about Gourmet. I will miss the beautiful simple covers. Hope that this doesn't mean that all magazines will disappear. There is something about a glossy paper magazine with fabulous pictures and beautiful type that no website will ever replace.

Entire issues of Life digitized on Google Books

Back in November, we mentioned that Google and Life joined forces to create huge archive of Life photographs. Now, they have teamed up again to take 1,860 issues from the LIFE archive (1936-1972) and made them digital. With just a click of a mouse, you can flip through an entire issue about World War II or the Apollo landing seeing the amazing photos, lovely layouts and totally retro-tastic ads.

Movieline: Its ALIVE!

Movieline, the late 20th century newsstand tome of Hollywood madness, has been reborn as an online onslaught of celebrity gossip, film news and an insiders look at the Hollywood machine. Led by former Gawker editors and dressed-to-kill by the mad skills of House of Pretty, this is the go-to site for the goings-on in entertainment industry.

Before&After Magazine

Before&After is a print and online magazine that is full of honest-to-goodness tips for the layperson on building better design. Started in 1990, this site (and publication) helps put real world design tools into the hands of people who may have to design without ever been given the training like real estate agents and small business owners.

Individual articles are sold for $5 each and a subscription for PDFs is $24 for 32 articles. A print edition of the publication is also available as well as books. Each article is around 20 pages and many look like tips and tricks that might even help a seasoned designer rethink their approach to a design problem.

Wired: Mystery Issue with J. J. Abrams

The 17.05 issue of Wired Magazine, on newsstands now, is full of retro-inspired design, House Industries fonts used to their full potential and an a article on designers who have created ambigrams -- and that's just to name a few things! J.J. Abrams was the guest editor of this issue of Wired about all things mysterious, a subject in which he is pretty well-versed. Check out the whole issue online or hop over to your local newsstand and see it in its full printed glory.

Another Magazine Cancels My Subscription

According to the Kansas City Star and 63 other online news sources, another magazine has bitten the dust. This time it hits a little closer to home for P+P. The Hallmark Magazine announced yesterday that it would discontinue publication after just three years with the current issue on newsstands.

"Despite favorable consumer acceptance of the publication, we can not justify continued investment in the magazine at a time when we must focus our efforts and resources only on those projects that will lead to long-term profitable revenue growth for the company," Hall said.

Hallmark Magazine
had doubled its rate base in two years and increased ad revenue by 30% in 2008. With the troubles in the publishing market over the last year and the overall state of the economy, the potential for decline for the publication definitely have been seen in the tea leaves.

The decision to close Hallmark Magazine affects 28 employees in the New York office and ten positions in Hallmark's Kansas City-based creative division, including several of P+P's friends.

This announcement follows a slew of other publications who have closed up operations including House & Garden, Domino, Craft, and Mary Englebreit's Home Companion to name a few. Check out Magazine Death Pool if you want to track the next glossy with its head on the chopping block.

Snooty designer chooses to NOT read Forbes. (That would be me.)

Forbes recently published an article about CrowdSpring, a web site venture that claims to "democratize design services." The subtitle was enough to keep me from reading the rest of the article:

CrowdSpring aims to slash the cost of graphic design work--and democratize a snooty business.

All I can say is that sometimes, you get what you pay for. So there.

16 Activities for Creatives

Frank Chimero created 16 Creative Prompts over 16 pages and then included his responses for an issue of the Italian Un Sedicesimo published through Corraini. For those who don't live in Italy, Frank is selling copies on his web site. It goes without saying, we're big fans and could use a good kick in our creative pants right about now.
