NYC Event: In Search of the Miraculous or One Thing Leads to Another

The AIGA here in NYC is having a great retrospective of Milton Glaser's work. Check it out from October 1 until November 24th. The show explores how Glaser design ideas interact with one another over a period of time and how this ideas can come together to form totally new and interesting ideas. For those of you who can't make it, you can download the show brochure and see what it is all about.

Food Truck Design Rip Off?

Our design pals at Landers Miller designed the wonderful Street Sweets truck here in NYC. We love it!



Today it came to our attention via Midtown Lunch that the The Schnitzel Wagon out of LA looks an awful lot like the NYC Street Sweets truck. Hmmmm, not cool. At least, Landers Miller are being champs about it and saying, "Well, they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.."

Historia Type Specimen by Emigre

Emigre just released a 64 page new type specimen book showing how to mix and match their fonts in a dozens of creative and beautiful ways. The book is only $3 and comes with an additional five type specimens including the Mrs Eaves, Mr Eaves, Matrix II, and Vista catalogs.

Beautiful coinage

Smart! Smart! Smart! That is all I could say to myself when I found the newish redesigned British coinage. The coins were released in 2008 and were designed by Matt Dent who entered a contest to redesign the coins and won. Dent divided the shield of the Royal Arms into six pieces and scattered over the 1p to 50p coins while the entire shield rests on the £1 piece. Wish our coins could be this beautiful.

Urban Axes

Nice profile in the New York Times about designer Peter Buchanan-Smith and his new line of axes and how these useful tools became the new design rage.

Project Thirty Three

Project Thirty-Three collects and archives record covers found by Jive Time Records, a Seattle vinyl reseller. They've collected a wonderful assortment of mid-century records with gorgeous, geometric-designed covers. So suggestive and modern and yet so specific to the period.

Stereostack is a side project of the "in stereo" headers on record albums. Designer eye candy, to be sure!

Seattle event: Perfect Forecast – Work by Jesse DeLoux

I have loved Jesse LeDoux's artwork for years so I was excited to see that Schmancy Gallery in Seattle is having an awesome show of his work. You might recognize his on the album covers and poster artwork for the Shins, Iron and Wine and Death Cab for Cutie. Check out the solo show called titled "Perfect Forecast" on July 9 2010 from 6pm-9pm at Schmancy at 1932 2nd Ave, Seattle WA.

Chef Designers

Ran across a fun Q&A article on Print magazine's website about designers and their favorite dishes to make in the kitchen. Awesome to see that these designers' talents stretch beyond the design world into the kitchen. My favorite of all six designer chef's was Lousie Fili. Her plum pine-nut tart is just as detailed and lovely as her logos.

We love Graphicology

Graphicology covers a wide range of design topics from ads to logos and branding. They are smart and insightful and I like to think of them as the more masculine version of P+P (they're probably smarter than we are too but we're cuter!)

Fun design blog from Fast Company. Love their post about how to choose a typeface. Awesome.

Everything Has a Brand – Even Heroin

Interesting article in the NY Times about branding of heroin packets. This quote from the article sums it up nicely:‘ “Even something so forbidden, so demonized, can be branded.” ’

The packets will be part of the "Heroin Stamp Project" at the White Box Gallery in NYC.

NYC subway maps through the years

This month the MTA will release a new and improved NYC subway map. To commemorate, the New York Times has a great interactive widget letting readers check out the big and small differences between all the iterations of the NYC subway map. Also read the accompanying article by Steven Heller to learn more about all the older variations of the maps.
