NYC Show: Slash: Paper Under The Knife

One of my favorite exhibits that I've seen recently is the Slash: Paper Under The Knife at the Museum of Art and Design. I knew the instant I saw the full-sized paper pirate ship coming out of the ceiling in the lobby that this would be a pretty amazing show and I wasn't disappointed. Everything and anything was created out of paper from tanks to full-sized humans to dioramas of heaven and hell. I loved how each piece approached paper in surprising, beautiful and thought-provoking ways. Check out the exhibit through April 4th.

Marshall Alexander: Paper Engineer

Our love affair with paper knows no bounds! When our love of paper is combined with the iconic image of Max from Where the Wild Things Are, it is truly love at first sight. Marshall Alexander has been creating paper craft constructions for sometime and each is a free download. Max was created for the Terrible Yellow Eyes blog, which we have mentioned in the past. Fabulous!

Spain's Handmade Art Papers

[Photo by Matias Costa for The New York Times]

Who doesn't love beautiful paper? Personally, I love the texture, the design and even the smell of paper. I save sheets of paper for years squirreled away in boxes and folders so I can pull them out every so often to look at them. Might seem crazy, but I am not alone. The New York Times recently published an article about where to find amazing handcrafted art papers in Spain. Makes me sad I didn't know about these place when I was in Barcelona last year.

Everything about the site from the design to the products to the photos is so damn sweet that it makes me want to buy one of everything. There is something wonderful and lovely how P&C deftly mixes original in-house designs with vintage finds and products from around the word. Neat!!

President-Elect Obama's Inaugural Invitations

[Tattooed union arms carefully stack completed inauguration invitations.]

I suspect only designers would wonder who printed the invitations for President-Elect Barack Obama's upcoming inauguration, or the paper used, the printing technique, colors, or fonts. Thanks to a little article in the NYTimes, we know that the invites were printed by a Brookyln-based shop called Precise Continental that has been in business for over 26 years. The one million invites were engraved in black and gold on Neenah Classic Crest cream stock using modified versions of Shelley Allegro and Kuenstler.

The article did not provide details on who actually designed the invites so if anyone out there knows, please drop us a line!

The sweetest Papercuts

Paper is an item that we encounter everyday and think nothing of it. Danish artist Peter Callesen sees paper a little differently. Callesen twists, cuts, folds, sculpts and transforms paper into mind-blowing and almost magical pieces of artwork.

Bearskinrug: Paper Edition

Following up his artist's materials series, Kevin Cornell (AKA Bearskinrug) has tackled the most intimidating topic: paper. He covers every potential paper hurdle a fledgling illustrator might encounter from sketchbooks to hot- and cold-press boards and papers for all sorts of media. Good paper makes a difference in the outcome of a drawing and Kevin gives great pointers to get anyone started. Thanks, Kevin!

Build Your Own Chicago

Taking the joy of papercraft to the observation deck, Wurlington Brothers Press offers dozens of buildings and landmarks from our beloved city as postcards that can be constructed into your own paper models at Build Your Own Chicago. Designed and drawn by Matt Bergstrom, the attention to detail shows how much these folks love the Windy City. Each postcard is available for $1.50

Build Your Own Chicago is a series of postcards published by Wurlington Brothers Press which can be cut and assembled into miniature paper models of prominent Chicago landmarks. We look for some of the spirit, if not the complexity, of the beautiful "Micromodels" designed by Geoffrey Heighway in the 1950s. All postcards are designed and drawn by Matt Bergstrom.

Wurlington Brothers have also started Build Your Own New York for those who prefer the Big Apple.

You can print out your own copy of Kernie and photograph him at the site of typographical blunders or anywhere that inspires you. Veer will bestow gifts on whoever sends them the most creative photo of Kernie. At the very least, check out the gallery of photos submitted so far. Its sure to entertain.

Getting Crafty with Paper

The other day I ran across an impressive library of paper models on Yamaha's site. Of course, there were tons of motorcycle models, but the ones that caught my eye were all the rare animals of the world and rare animals of japan. They have everything from Gorillas to the Japanese River Otter to the Ring-tailed Lemur.

Paper that Erases Itself

Xerox has developed an experimental paper that is self-erasing. Once the paper is printed on the images will fade over 16-24 hours letting you reuse the paper again and again. The paper is in the beginning stages of development so don't look for it on shelves just quiet yet.

New Paper: Skin

Last night, I checked out a the US paper launch for the Arjo Wiggins's Skin line for the Curious paper collection. The paper was designed by Emeric Thibierge (he designs paper for a living!!) and comes in 12 colors. The paper has a wonderfully creamy texture and vibrant, interesting colors. My favs are the neon green-yellow and a purple so dark it was almost black.
